Topaz

Topaz — from the Sanskrit tapas, meaning "fire" — is an aluminum silicate prized for its brilliance and its rainbow of colors: blue, yellow, pink, orange, and colorless. At 8 on the Mohs scale it is one of the hardest gemstones used in jewellery, and well-cut stones throw exceptional fire. It is November's birthstone.

What Is Topaz?

Topaz Colors

  • Blue topaz — from pale Sky to deep London Blue, as in the London Blue pieces in this collection; most blue topaz on the market is enhanced from colorless material, which keeps fine pieces affordable.
  • Imperial topaz — rare natural orange-pink; the most prized and valuable color.
  • White topaz — colorless and brilliant; sometimes chosen as a diamond alternative.
  • Yellow & champagne — warm, honeyed tones.

What Is Topaz Good For?

Topaz is traditionally a stone of joy and abundance. Golden and imperial tones are linked to confidence, generosity, and good fortune — long carried as a lucky stone for new ventures. Blue topaz is associated with calm communication and clear self-expression, linked to the throat chakra. Across colors, topaz is used to lift the spirits and to steady the mind toward its goals.

How to Use Topaz

  • Wear it daily — Rings and pendants show off topaz's fire; blue topaz suits cool wardrobes, imperial flatters warm tones.
  • For communication — Blue topaz pendants are a traditional companion for presentations and honest conversation.
  • As a birthstone gift — November birthdays; blue topaz is the classic choice.
  • For focus rituals — Many keep a piece on the desk as an anchor for clear intention.

Care & Cleansing

  • Hard (8 Mohs) but with perfect cleavage — it can chip if struck; store separately and remove before sports.
  • Cleansing: rest it overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes. Moonlight around the full moon is a good tool-free alternative. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — some shops recommend it as a cleansing method, but salt can permanently dull or damage the surface.
