What is Apophyllite?

Apophyllite is a relatively uncommon crystal that is prized for its beautiful appearance, vibrant colors, rare origin, and limited supply. It is a potassium-calcium fluoride silicate mineral. Common Apophyllite appears as glassy, white to gray crystals that can be transparent or opaque, forming cubic or pyramidal shapes.

The Naming of Apophyllite

A Brazilian mineralogist named it "Ichthyophthalme," derived from the Greek words "ichthys" (fish) and "ophthalimos" (eye), meaning fish eye. Several other geologists have given it similar names with fish eye connotations, such as "Fischaugenstein." At certain angles, Apophyllite exhibits sparkling crystalline surfaces that resemble the reflection in a fish's eye, hence the name.

The English name Apophyllite was given in 1805 by a French mineralogist, combining the Greek roots "Apo" (to flake off) and "phyllon" (leaf). This name was chosen because the mineral peels into thin sheets when heated.

How to Distinguish Apophyllite from Clear Quartz

In addition to having a similar appearance to clear quartz, Apophyllite shares strong purifying and demagnetizing functions, making it suitable for improving and purifying the energy field of other crystals, users, and spaces. Here's a way to distinguish between them: most of the crystal points on a clear quartz cluster have six sides, while most of the crystal points on Apophyllite have four sides.
