What Are Birthstones?

Birthstones are gemstones traditionally assigned to each month of the year — worn to celebrate a birthday, mark a personal milestone, or simply carry a stone with personal meaning. The modern list was standardized in 1912 by the American National Retail Jewelers Association, drawing on much older traditions: the twelve stones of the biblical High Priest's breastplate, and the ancient custom of owning a full set of twelve and wearing the stone of the current month.

Today, birthstone jewellery is one of the most gifted categories in the crystal world — personal, meaningful, and easy to choose. Many people wear their own birthstone daily, gift a loved one's birthstone, or collect the stones of the whole family.

  • April — Diamond — for those who prefer crystal, clear quartz (rock crystal) is the traditional alternative; the stone of clarity and amplification.
  • May — Emerald — vivid green; traditionally linked to love, renewal and abundance.
  • June — Pearl & Moonstone — luminous whites; traditionally associated with purity, emotional balance and new beginnings.
  • July — Ruby — rich red; traditionally linked to passion, vitality and confidence.
  • August — Peridot — fresh green; traditionally associated with joy, lightness and new opportunity.
  • September — Sapphire — deep blue; traditionally linked to wisdom, focus and inner strength.
  • October — Tourmaline & Opal — rainbow stones; traditionally associated with creativity, emotional healing and full-spectrum balance.
  • November — Topaz & Citrine — golden stones; traditionally linked to abundance, confidence and warm optimism.

How to Use Birthstone Crystals

  • Wear your own — A birthstone bracelet or pendant is the most personal piece of jewellery you can own.
  • Gift with meaning — Birthstone jewellery is a classic birthday, anniversary or new-baby gift — choose the recipient's month, or your shared months as a couple.

Care & Cleansing

  • Birthstones span the full hardness range — from soft opal and pearl to hard sapphire and diamond — so treat each piece according to its stone: remove before sports, swimming and housework; store softer stones separately.
  • Cleansing: rest them overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes (skip water-based methods for soft or porous stones like opal, pearl and turquoise).
