Larimar

What Is Larimar?

Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite found in only one place on Earth: a remote mountain region of the Dominican Republic. Its swirling sea-blue and turquoise patterns look like waves frozen in stone — no two pieces share the same seascape. Officially identified in 1974 by geologist Miguel Méndez, who named it for his daughter Larissa and the Spanish mar, "sea," it is sometimes called the "Atlantis stone" after the legend linking it to the lost continent.

Larimar Facts

  • Single origin — commercial larimar comes only from the Dominican Republic, which keeps fine material genuinely scarce.
  • Ocean patterns — white wave-like veining in sky-blue to deep turquoise; the most coveted pieces show strong contrast and depth.
  • The Atlantis legend — some traditions hold larimar to be a remnant of Atlantis, a stone of ancient oceanic wisdom.
  • One of the "three great soothing stones" — in Chinese crystal culture it ranks alongside the most calming stones known.

What Is Larimar Good For?

Larimar is the ocean you can hold. Practitioners traditionally associate it with deep calm — quieting a busy mind, easing tension and inviting emotional balance. It is also treasured for communication and self-expression: in traditional belief it helps thoughts flow clearly and words land kindly, making it a favourite for teachers, speakers and anyone navigating delicate conversations. Many describe its energy as cooling and liberating, like a sea breeze for the spirit.

How to Use Larimar

  • Wear it for calm days — A bracelet or pendant keeps its soothing presence with you; many reach for it during stressful weeks.
  • Before difficult conversations — Keep it close when you want to speak clearly and listen well.
  • At the bedside — A piece on the nightstand is part of many people's wind-down ritual.
  • As a cooling accent — Its sea-blue tones pair beautifully with silver and white wardrobes.

Care & Cleansing

  • Treat it gently — larimar is relatively soft (4.5–5 Mohs). Remove before sports, housework, swimming or heavy activity.
  • Avoid sweat, cosmetics, harsh chemicals and prolonged sun, which can dull its color.
  • Cleansing: keep it dry — rest it on a Clear Quartz cluster or in moonlight around the full moon rather than any water-based method. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — some shops recommend it as a cleansing method, but salt can permanently dull or damage the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does larimar come from?
Only the Dominican Republic — a single mountain source supplies the world's larimar, which is why fine pieces are genuinely scarce.

Why is it called the Atlantis stone?
Legend links larimar to the lost continent of Atlantis, as a stone of ancient oceanic wisdom. Whether or not you follow the legend, its sea-like patterns make the nickname feel fitting.

Is larimar fragile?
It's softer than quartz, so it needs normal jewellery care — remove for sports, housework and swimming, and store it softly. Treated kindly, it wears beautifully.
