Iolite
What Is Iolite?
Iolite — the gem name for the mineral cordierite — is a violet-blue stone famed for pleochroism: it shifts between violet, blue and grey as you turn it, like water changing color. Norse navigators are said to have used thin slices as the world's first polarizing filter to find the sun on cloudy days, earning it the nickname "water sapphire."
What Is Iolite Good For?
In traditional belief, iolite is the stone of vision and direction — associated with clear intuition, honest self-reflection and finding one's way, literally and figuratively.
How to Use Iolite
- Wear it daily — our top-grade pieces suit everyday wear.
- For reflection — keep it nearby when mapping out plans or working through decisions.
Care & Cleansing
- Iolite is moderately hard (Mohs 7–7.5); wipe clean and avoid harsh chemicals and hard knocks.
- Cleansing: rest it overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes. Moonlight around the full moon is a good tool-free alternative. Read our full cleansing guide.
- Avoid salt water — some shops recommend it as a cleansing method, but salt can permanently dull or damage the surface.
