Amethyst

Amethyst — the violet variety of quartz, colored by traces of iron and manganese — is among the most storied crystals in the world. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, "not intoxicated": ancient Greeks believed it kept the mind clear. Records stretch back to at least 2000 BCE, and through the Middle Ages it adorned bishops' rings and royal crowns. It is also February's birthstone, forming naturally in volcanic geodes as deep-purple clustered points.

What Is Amethyst?

Amethyst Colors & Varieties

  • Deep Siberian purple — the most prized saturated violet.
  • Lavender & lilac — softer tones, popular in everyday jewellery.
  • Pink amethyst — a gentle, heart-centred variety from Patagonia.
  • Chevron amethyst — banded violet-and-white layers, favored for meditation.
  • Geodes & clusters — from small cathedral geodes to large statement pieces for the home.

What Is Amethyst Good For?

Amethyst is the crystal world's classic calming stone. Practitioners traditionally associate it with quieting a busy mind, easing anxious feelings, and supporting intuition and spiritual awareness — it's linked to the third eye and crown chakras, and long carried as a stone of spiritual protection. Students and knowledge workers prize it as a focus stone for study and clear thinking, while many keep it close as part of a wind-down ritual. If you're building your first crystal collection, amethyst is almost always where seasoned collectors tell you to start.

How to Use Amethyst

  • At the bedside — A tumbled stone or small cluster on the nightstand is the classic ritual for winding down before sleep.
  • Wear it daily — Bracelets and pendants keep its calming presence with you; our minimalist designs suit any wardrobe.
  • For study & work — Keep a point or small geode on your desk as an anchor for concentration.
  • In the living space — A larger geode brings a sense of calm grandeur to a room and makes a striking natural centrepiece.

Care & Cleansing

  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight — amethyst's beautiful purple will fade with extended sun exposure.
  • Remove before showering; avoid hot water and sudden temperature changes.
  • Cleansing: rest it overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes. Moonlight around the full moon is a good tool-free alternative. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — it can permanently dull or damage the stone's surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What chakra is amethyst associated with?
The third eye and crown chakras — the centres linked to intuition, insight and spiritual connection.

Is amethyst good for sleep?
It's the most popular crystal for the bedside. Many people keep amethyst near the bed as part of a calming wind-down ritual.

Does amethyst fade in sunlight?
Yes — prolonged direct sun will gradually bleach the purple color. Display geodes away from bright windows and store jewellery accordingly.
