Sunstone

Sunstone is a feldspar (usually oligoclase) spangled with tiny platelets of hematite or goethite that catch the light in a glittering phenomenon called aventurescence — the "schiller effect" that gives the stone its warm, sunlit glow. Found in India, Norway, the USA (Oregon), and Tanzania, its colours range from golden orange to deep reddish-brown. Named for its solar radiance — and the traditional stone of Leo — it has been carried as a stone of joy and vitality since ancient times.

What Is Sunstone?

Colors & Quality

Fine sunstone shows a strong, even glitter across a warm orange-to-red body; the brightest pieces seem lit from within. Indian material tends toward golden-orange, while Oregon sunstone can show champagne to red-green hues. Higher transparency and vivid schiller command higher prices.

What Is Sunstone Good For?

Sunstone is the stone of joy, confidence, and personal power, linked to the solar plexus and sacral chakras. It's traditionally used to lift heavy moods, encourage optimism, and support confident self-expression — a favourite for people stepping into leadership roles or creative visibility. Many also use it as a focus stone: keeping sunstone on the desk is a popular ritual for clear-headed, energised work and study sessions.

How to Use Sunstone

  • Wear it daily — A bracelet keeps its bright, encouraging energy with you; sunstone's warm glitter suits both casual and statement looks.
  • At your desk — Keep a piece where you work or study as a visual anchor for focus and motivation.
  • Before social moments — Hold it briefly and set an intention for confident, easy self-expression.
  • Pair with moonstone — The classic sun/moon pairing balances outward confidence with inward calm.

Care & Cleansing

  • Sunstone (6–6.5 Mohs) is reasonably hard but can chip — remove before sports or heavy work.
  • Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth; avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Cleansing: rest it overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes. Moonlight around the full moon is a good tool-free alternative. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — it can permanently dull or damage the stone's surface.
