Libyan Desert Glass

What Is Libyan Desert Glass?

Libyan Desert Glass — also called Libyan Gold Tektite, or 黃金隕石 — is a natural golden glass formed by an ancient meteorite impact in the Libyan Desert. Treasured since the time of the pharaohs (the famous scarab in Tutankhamun's treasure was carved from it), it is one of the rarest tektites on Earth, found only in a remote stretch of the Sahara.

What Is Libyan Desert Glass Good For?

In traditional belief, this golden glass is a stone of personal energy and protection — worn since ancient Egypt as an amulet against negativity. Collectors also associate it with abundance and momentum, and with lifting overall vitality.

How to Use Libyan Desert Glass

  • Wear it — pendants and bracelets keep its warm golden glow close through the day.
  • Display the rough — natural uncut pieces make striking collector specimens.

Care & Cleansing

  • Wipe clean with a soft cloth; avoid harsh chemicals and hard knocks.
  • Cleansing: rest it overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes. Moonlight around the full moon is a good tool-free alternative. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — some shops recommend it as a cleansing method, but salt can permanently dull or damage the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Libyan Desert Glass a meteorite?
Strictly speaking it is a tektite — natural glass formed by a meteorite impact — rather than a meteorite itself.

Why is it so rare?
It is found only in one remote area of the Libyan Desert, and good carving-grade material is scarce.

What's the difference between Libyan Desert Glass and moldavite?
Both are tektites: Libyan glass is golden and comes from the Sahara, while moldavite is green and comes from Central Europe.
