How to Choose Your First Crystal: Trust Your Feeling
Walk into a crystal shop, face hundreds of stones, and the first thought is usually: with all these, how do I choose?
The answer might surprise you: pick the one that catches your eye first. This guide covers three ways to choose, plus the questions beginners ask most.
Method 1: Follow your feeling
This is the method most experienced practitioners recommend. Stand in front of the crystals, relax, and notice which one pulls your gaze — the colour, the shape, the lustre. The one you can't resist picking up: that's the one.
Sounds mystical? There is something to it: being drawn to a particular stone often reflects your current state, in the colour or form that speaks to you. Choosing a crystal is, in a way, also getting to know yourself.
Method 2: Start from what you want
If you have a clear direction in mind, choose by intention:
- Abundance and career success: popular picks include Golden Rutilated Quartz, Green phantom quartz, and Citrine
- Love and harmonious relationships: Rose Quartz and Morganite are common choices
- Protection and shielding from negativity: Black obsidian, Black Tourmaline, and Lapis Lazuli
- Rest and better sleep: Amethyst and Moonstone
- Not sure yet — just getting started: Clear Quartz, widely believed to suit every intention, so you can't go wrong
Remember, these are common pairings from practitioners' experience — not guarantees. Once you've chosen, don't forget the intention-setting practice from earlier in this series: set your intention into the stone, and it becomes truly yours.
Method 3: Start with budget and practicality
Your first crystal doesn't need to be expensive. Practical advice:
- Bracelets are the easiest start: worn daily, easy for intention-setting and cleansing, and friendly prices
- Raw stones or small carvings for the home: for your desk or nightstand, a small piece works well
- Start with one, wear it for a while: get a feel for the practice, then decide whether you want a second
Our bracelets start from 8mm beads; for a first piece, 8–10mm is the sweet spot — neither too heavy nor too delicate.
In-store vs. online
If you can visit a store, do. Crystals are a hands-on thing: the weight, temperature and texture in your palm are nothing like a photo. Our staff at all six stores are happy to help — tell them your budget and what you're after, and they'll lay out a few options for you to take your time with.
If online is your only option:
- Check the dimensions (bead size, bracelet length) and real photos of the actual piece
- Buy from a reputable shop — every natural crystal has its own texture, so photos are for reference only
- When it arrives, give it a moonlight cleanse first (covered earlier in this series), then set your intention
FAQ
Is there an age or gender limit for a first crystal?
No. Children, men, and seniors can all wear crystals — just consider your everyday style when picking a design.
Is bigger always better?
No. Size has no necessary link to energy — what matters more is that it's comfortable and that you'll actually wear it every day.
Do I need to have my crystal blessed before use?
No. A crystal doesn't need a formal blessing to work with. The intention-setting practice from earlier in this series is the connection between you and your crystal.
Are there any taboos when buying crystals?
No strict taboos. If anything: avoid suspiciously cheap pieces from unknown sellers — natural crystal has a real cost, and a price that looks too good to be true usually means synthetic or dyed material.
Is one enough, or do I need a set?
One is enough to begin. Many people start with one and gradually collect more — that's perfectly normal, and part of the fun.
The end of this series
From intention-setting to moonlight charging, meditation and bracelet stacking — to choosing your first crystal today — this series has really been about one thing: crystals are a practice, not magic.
Setting intentions, cleansing, meditating, caring for your pieces — these small daily rituals are what crystals are really about. A stone won't change your life on its own; but spending a few minutes each day slowing down and getting clear on what you want — that can.
Thank you for reading the whole series. If you've chosen your first crystal, come visit us in store and share it — we'd love to know which one chose you.
