Sugilite

Sugilite (pronounced SOO-gi-lite) is a rare purple gemstone first identified in 1944 by Japanese geologist Kenichi Sugi, for whom it is named; gem-grade material was discovered in South Africa in 1979. Often called the "healer's stone," its swirling shades of royal purple, magenta and deep violet — colored by manganese and lithium — make it one of the most visually distinctive stones in the crystal world. The finest deposits are now largely exhausted, so exceptional sugilite is increasingly collectible — many collectors say fine pieces only become harder to find.

What Is Sugilite?

Sugilite Colors & Quality

  • Royal purple — the most prized saturated violet.
  • Magenta "cherry blossom" — pink-purple swirls; increasingly scarce.
  • Near-black — deeper, moodier material at a gentler price point.
  • Rule of thumb — the more vivid and even the purple, the finer (and rarer) the stone.

What Is Sugilite Good For?

Practitioners regard sugilite as a stone of emotional strength and spiritual protection — a companion for life's harder chapters. Traditionally associated with the third eye chakra, it's used to support deep calm, self-compassion, spiritual love and honest self-reflection, and to deepen meditation. Many describe its energy as powerful yet gentle: a steadying presence rather than a stimulating one. During demanding periods, it's the stone people reach for when they want to feel held, not hurried.

Crystals are a complement to — never a replacement for — professional medical or mental-health care.

How to Use Sugilite

  • Wear it close — Bracelets and pendants keep its steadying presence with you through difficult days.
  • For meditation — Hold a pendant or tumbled stone to support deeper, quieter practice.
  • During demanding times — Keep a piece nearby as a tangible reminder to be gentle with yourself.
  • As a collector's piece — Given its rarity, many buy the finest piece they can — it may not be there next time.

Care & Cleansing

  • Remove before showering or swimming; avoid hot water and harsh chemicals.
  • Wipe with a soft, dry cloth; store separately from harder stones.
  • Cleansing: rest it overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes. Moonlight around the full moon is a good tool-free alternative. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — it can permanently dull or damage the stone's surface.
