Birthstone Crystals

What Are Birthstones?

Birthstones are gemstones traditionally assigned to each month of the year — worn to celebrate a birthday, mark a personal milestone, or simply carry a stone with personal meaning. The modern list was standardized in 1912 by the American National Retail Jewelers Association, drawing on much older traditions: the twelve stones of the biblical High Priest's breastplate, and the ancient custom of owning a full set of twelve and wearing the stone of the current month.

Today, birthstone jewellery is one of the most gifted categories in the crystal world — personal, meaningful, and easy to choose. Many people wear their own birthstone daily, gift a loved one's birthstone, or collect the stones of the whole family.

Birthstone Chart by Month

  • January — Garnet — deep red; traditionally associated with grounding, vitality and protection.
  • February — Amethyst — violet; the classic calming stone, traditionally linked to clarity and spiritual awareness.
  • March — Aquamarine — sea blue; traditionally associated with calm communication and courage.
  • April — Diamond — for those who prefer crystal, clear quartz (rock crystal) is the traditional alternative; the stone of clarity and amplification.
  • May — Emerald — vivid green; traditionally linked to love, renewal and abundance.
  • June — Pearl & Moonstone — luminous whites; traditionally associated with purity, emotional balance and new beginnings.
  • July — Ruby — rich red; traditionally linked to passion, vitality and confidence.
  • August — Peridot — fresh green; traditionally associated with joy, lightness and new opportunity.
  • September — Sapphire — deep blue; traditionally linked to wisdom, focus and inner strength.
  • October — Tourmaline & Opal — rainbow stones; traditionally associated with creativity, emotional healing and full-spectrum balance.
  • November — Topaz & Citrine — golden stones; traditionally linked to abundance, confidence and warm optimism.
  • December — Turquoise & Tanzanite — blue-violet stones; traditionally associated with protection, intuition and spiritual connection.

How to Use Birthstone Crystals

  • Wear your own — A birthstone bracelet or pendant is the most personal piece of jewellery you can own.
  • Gift with meaning — Birthstone jewellery is a classic birthday, anniversary or new-baby gift — choose the recipient's month, or your shared months as a couple.
  • Collect the family — Many collectors build a set of the birthstones of everyone they love.
  • Stack the months — Layer two or three birthstone bracelets for a colourful, personal stack.

Care & Cleansing

  • Birthstones span the full hardness range — from soft opal and pearl to hard sapphire and diamond — so treat each piece according to its stone: remove before sports, swimming and housework; store softer stones separately.
  • Cleansing: rest them overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes (skip water-based methods for soft or porous stones like opal, pearl and turquoise). Moonlight around the full moon is a good tool-free alternative. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — it can permanently dull or damage the stone's surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my birthstone?

Find your birth month in the chart above — most months have one traditional stone, and several (June, October, November, December) have two recognized alternatives.

Can I wear a different month's birthstone?

Absolutely. Many people wear a loved one's birthstone, choose a stone for its traditional associations rather than its month, or simply follow what they're drawn to. There are no rules — only personal meaning.

Are birthstones an ancient or modern tradition?

Both. The idea of twelve monthly stones reaches back to ancient sources, including the breastplate of the High Priest described in Exodus. The specific modern list was standardized in the United States in 1912 and updated since — so your birthstone carries both ancient symbolism and a century of popular tradition.
