Ammolite

What Is Ammolite?

Ammolite is the iridescent fossilized shell of ammonites — marine creatures that swam Earth's seas some 70 million years ago — found almost exclusively in Alberta, Canada. Officially recognized as a gemstone by CIBJO in 1981 and described by the GIA as an "organic gemstone," it displays a full rainbow of structural color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet shifting across the shell. In Chinese it is known as the Seven Colour Prosperity Stone (七彩寶), and Alberta has named it the province's official gemstone. Part fossil, part jewel, it is a literal record of transformation.

Ammolite Colors & Care Facts

  • Seven rainbow colors — traditionally mapped across all seven chakras, from red (vitality) through violet (spiritual connection).
  • Soft stone — at just 4–4.5 on the Mohs scale, ammolite is delicate; fine pieces are sealed under a protective crystal or coating.
  • Cuts — freeform cabochons, classic ovals, and symbolic cuts such as the Star of David, often set as pendants.

What Is Ammolite Good For?

Ammolite's story — ancient shell becoming rainbow gem — makes it a stone of transformation and new chapters: careers pivots, moves, fresh starts. Because it carries the full spectrum, it's traditionally associated with whole-system balance, supporting all seven chakras at once rather than one. The warm reds and golds link it to vitality and abundance, while its rarity gives it a talismanic quality — collectors speak of it as a "once in a lifetime" stone. In feng shui practice, ammolite is placed to encourage the smooth flow of qi and invite prosperity — its complete rainbow spectrum is read as fully balanced energy.

How to Use Ammolite

  • Mark a transition — Many choose ammolite to commemorate a new beginning: a new role, a new home, a new decade.
  • Display specimens — Raw ammolite pieces make extraordinary natural art for a shelf or desk.

Care & Cleansing

  • Handle gently — this is a soft stone. Avoid knocks, drops and ultrasonic cleaners.
  • Keep away from harsh chemicals, perfumes and prolonged water exposure.
  • Store separately in a soft pouch; wipe with a dry, soft cloth.
  • Cleansing: rest it overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset — or leave it in moonlight around the full moon. Skip water-based methods for this stone. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — it can permanently dull or damage the stone's surface.
