Tourmaline

Tourmaline — from the Sinhalese tura mali, "stone of mixed colors" — is one of the only gemstones on Earth that grows in virtually every shade of the rainbow, sometimes several in a single crystal. A complex borosilicate mineral, it is the only one that holds a permanent electric charge — hence the nickname "the electric stone." Mined in Brazil, Afghanistan and Nigeria, it ranges from soft candy pink to coveted neon Paraiba blue. It is also October's birthstone.

What Is Tourmaline?

Tourmaline Colors & Varieties

Each color is traditionally linked to a different energy centre, which is why collectors often build a "rainbow set":

  • Pink & red tourmaline — love, compassion and emotional warmth; linked to the heart chakra.
  • Green tourmaline — growth, vitality and fresh opportunity.
  • Watermelon tourmaline — pink and green in one crystal; the signature stone of joyful love.
  • Blue tourmaline — calm communication and clear self-expression; the rarest shades are the priciest.
  • Black tourmaline — grounding and protection; the leading protective stone in crystal practice. Many also keep it near their workspace as a traditional buffer against electromagnetic "noise."
  • Candy tourmaline — pastel-toned Afghan material with a light, uplifting feel.

What Is Tourmaline Good For?

Tourmaline is a full-spectrum stone: one mineral family covering love, joy, creativity, communication and protection. Pink and watermelon are favourites for self-love and emotional healing; green supports new ventures and steady growth; blue suits honest, confident communication; black is the go-to for energetic boundaries and grounding. Many wear two or three colors together.

How to Use Tourmaline

  • Wear it daily — Bracelets and pendants keep your chosen color close, from candy-pink beads to statement watermelon slices.
  • Near the heart — Pink, red and watermelon tourmaline pendants sit naturally over the heart chakra.
  • At your workspace — Black tourmaline on the desk is a classic ritual for a clear, settled workday.
  • Layer the rainbow — Combine green for growth with pink for self-compassion.

Care & Cleansing

  • Remove before showering or swimming — avoid hot water and harsh chemicals.
  • Treat bicolor and carved pieces gently to avoid knocks.
  • Cleansing: rest it overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes. Moonlight around the full moon is a good tool-free alternative. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — it can permanently dull or damage the stone's surface.
