Kunzite

Kunzite is the pink-to-violet variety of spodumene, a lithium-bearing mineral named after gemologist George Frederick Kunz, who first described it in 1902. Sometimes called the "evening stone" for its soft, calming glow, its delicate colours — from sweet blush pink to lilac-violet — come from trace manganese, and fine specimens show a soft pleochroism, shifting hue as they turn. Mined in Afghanistan, Madagascar, Brazil, and California, it's one of the most tender-looking stones in the crystal world.

What Is Kunzite?

Colors & Quality

Kunzite ranges from pale pink to vivid violet-pink; the most prized pieces show strong, even colour with a watery transparency. Some specimens display a cat's-eye effect (chatoyancy), highly valued by collectors. Important: kunzite's colour fades in sunlight — prolonged exposure will permanently pale it, so fine pieces live away from windows.

What Is Kunzite Good For?

Known as a stone of emotional healing, kunzite is linked to the heart chakra and traditionally used to dissolve tension and invite calm. It's a favourite for stressful chapters — many describe its energy as deeply soothing, like an exhale — and particularly valued for easing worry about the future: anticipatory anxiety rather than present sorrow. It's also associated with self-love, compassion, and open-hearted connection, and its link to the third eye makes it popular with creatives seeking gentle inspiration.

How to Use Kunzite

  • Wear it daily — Bracelets and pendants keep its calming presence with you; kunzite's soft tones suit minimalist styling.
  • Stressful moments — Hold a piece and breathe slowly; many use it as a pocket stone for tense days.
  • At the bedside — Keep kunzite on the nightstand as part of a wind-down ritual.
  • Creative work — Keep a piece nearby when writing, designing, or brainstorming for calm inspiration.

Care & Cleansing

  • Kunzite (6–7 Mohs) has perfect cleavage and can chip — remove before sports, housework, or swimming.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight — UV will permanently fade its colour. This is the single most important care rule for kunzite.
  • Cleansing: rest it overnight on a Clear Quartz cluster — the simplest daily reset. For a deeper cleanse, try our Herkimer Diamond water method: soak a Herkimer Diamond in water for a few hours, then rest your crystal in the water for 10–30 minutes. Moonlight around the full moon is a good tool-free alternative. Read our full cleansing guide.
  • Avoid salt water — it can permanently dull or damage the stone's surface.
